US under-18 girls rout El Salvador 118-50

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Destinee Walker scored 18 points to help the United States beat El Salvador 118-50 on Thursday night in the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship.

Walker, from Ocoee, Florida, was 4 of 4 from 3-point range. Jessica Shepard of Fremont, Nebraska, added 17 points, and A’ja Wilson of Hopkins, South Carolina, had 16 points and eight rebounds.

“I felt we were ready to go,” said coach Dawn Staley of the University of South Carolina. “I felt we used our length to our advantage. The players who started the game got us out to a big lead, and then we pretty much cruised the rest of the way.

The United States opened the tournament Wednesday night with a 104-55 victory over Mexico.

Hillary Martinez led El Salvador with 17 points.
