An Arlington County Police cruiser was stolen during a traffic stop today, leading to a police chase and a crash on I-66.
The incident started around noon when an officer in a marked ACPD cruiser stopped to assist Virginia State Police on a traffic stop. A struggle ensued, and the suspect ended up hopping into the Arlington cruiser and speeding off, according to department spokesman Dustin Sternbeck.
Virginia State Police and Prince William County police pursued the stolen cruiser, until the chase ended in a multi-vehicle crash on I-66 at Cub Run, near the Prince William County/Fairfax County border, according to Sternbeck. The cruiser was damaged in the wreck.
The Arlington County officer whose cruiser was stolen is currently receiving medical treatment, Sternbeck said. No word yet on the extent of the officer’s injuries, nor on what prompted the initial traffic stop.
