Dogs that killed Michigan man are euthanized

LAPEER, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say two dogs that fatally mauled a Michigan jogger last month have been put to death.

Lapeer County assistant prosecutor Michael Hodges tells The Flint Journal that the cane corsos involved in the July 23 attack on 46-year-old Craig Sytsma of Livonia in Metamora Township were euthanized Monday.

Metamora Township is about 45 miles northwest of Detroit.

Forty-four-year-old Valbona Lucaj and her 45-year-old husband Sebastiano Quagliata were jailed last week on second-degree murder charges. Lapeer District Judge Laura Barnard on Wednesday refused to reduce their $500,000 bonds.

The Associated Press left messages for defense attorneys Wednesday night seeking comment.

The judge has scheduled a probable cause hearing Aug. 15.

Eight puppies will be offered to an animal rescue group.
