Plane crashes in San Diego parking lot; 1 dead

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Officials say an 80-year-old woman was killed when a small plane crashed in a San Diego shopping center. She was the lone passenger.

The pilot was injured but is expected to survive.

Amazingly, the plane went down late Wednesday afternoon in a parking lot for a Costco and a Target store.

A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration says the plane bounced while landing at a nearby airfield. But a helicopter pilot says he heard the pilot transmit that she had lost power on takeoff.

A police official says the single-engine plane clipped the top of the Target and knocked down a light pole. A city fire spokesman says the aircraft came to halt in a loading dock area away from the main entrances and no cars were around.

The pilot is being praised for guiding the plane to an area where damage was limited.
