WASHINGTON – With temperatures rising, now might be a good time to make sure your home is ready for summer.
Giving your air conditioning unit a quick look is a good first step. Make sure all the parts look intact. Does the fan still look like it’s supposed to? Are there any parts missing?
Tips for De-Winterizing an Air Conditioner — powered by ehow
Keep your outdoor unit clear of weeds and grass — the air will circulate more easily. Use a hose to clear debris from the air conditioner coils inside the unit.
Most air conditioner filters need to be changed once a month. Make sure you’re using the correct filter. Experts say using highly rated air filters with a unit that can’t handle the resistance can overwork it and potentially cause damage.
Some people take the guess work out of summer prep by having a local contractor provide regular maintenance on heating and cooling units.
Other tips to prepare your home for summer weather:
- Clear dryer vents so clogs don’t push hot air back inside
- Create a wind chill effect with ceiling fans circulating counter clockwise
- Consider installing a programmable thermostat
- Check insulation strips around doors and windows
- During especially hot periods, attic fans will help circulate hot air out of your home
