WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawyers for the District of Columbia have asked a federal judge to stay his ruling that strikes down the city’s ban on carrying guns outside the home.

Attorney General Irvin Nathan filed the request for a stay on Monday. The judge’s ruling was made public on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Mayor Vincent Gray plans to draft legislation that would comply with the court ruling. Doxie McCoy, a spokeswoman for Gray, says the mayor doesn’t want to wait for appeals process to play out before exploring what legislative steps would be needed.

In the wake of the ruling, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has instructed officers not to arrest District residents who are carrying registered firearms or visitors who have permission to carry guns in their home states.
