Fire chief: 1 dead, 3 hurt in fish plant explosion

MOSS POINT, Miss. (AP) — Authorities say one person died and three others were injured in an explosion at a fish processing plant on the Mississippi coast.

Moss Point Fire Chief Tommy Posey tells The Sun Herald (http://bit.ly/1nzt9za ) a storage tank at Omega Protein exploded around 9:30 a.m. Monday. Posey says there was no fire after the explosion.

The plant has been closed for the day.

Identities of the victims were not immediately released and cause of the explosion is under investigation.

Company officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Omega Protein operates a menhaden — or pogy — fishing fleet with a processing plant and adjacent shipyard in Moss Point, employing about 300 people.

The company produces fish oils and fish meal for human consumption and use in aquaculture, agriculture and industrial applications.
