Mets Ruben Tejada hit in helmet by Mariners Walker

SEATTLE (AP) — New York Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada was hit in the helmet by a pitch from Seattle Mariners right-hander Taijuan Walker in the fifth inning and had to leave the game.

Tejada was hit just above the brim of the helmet Wednesday by Walker’s 94 mph fastball with two outs and the Mets leading 1-0. Tejada fell to the ground and lay face down next to home plate until a Mets trainer came out and kneeled down next to the player.

The 24-year-old Tejada was able to get to his feet and walk off the field on his own.

Eric Campbell pinch ran and took over at shortstop in the bottom half, a position he’s only played for one inning at the major league level.
