1 dead, 1 seriously hurt after vehicle strikes tree in Laurel

WASHINGTON — A woman has died and another person was seriously hurt after a car struck a tree in Laurel, Maryland on Monday afternoon. Sunya Smith, 58, of Baltimore, died at the hospital following a crash off of Sandy Spring Road, in the 7400 block of Summerwind Circle. The singe-vehicle crash occurred sometime between 1 and 1:30 p.m. Smith was a passenger in the car; the driver was the other person hurt, City of Laurel spokeswoman Audrey Barnes said. The crash victims were taken to Prince George’s Hospital Center after they were extricated from the vehicle. Authorities have not identified the driver but described that person’s condition as “critical.” Mark Brady, a spokesman for Prince George’s County Fire and EMS said both were transported with life-threatening injuries but he later suggested in a tweet that the injuries may not have come from the crash.

The crash is still under investigation.
