Heat blamed for fish kill in Henrico County lake

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia Department of Environmental Quality spokesman says heat caused a fish kill in a lake in Henrico County.

Residents discovered hundreds of dead fish in Wyndham Lake on Wednesday.

DEQ spokesman Bill Hayden tells WRIC-TV (http://bit.ly/WdT6JU ) that hot weather can cause water to evaporate. A decline in the water’s level affects the amount of oxygen available for fish in the water.

Hayden says such fish kills aren’t uncommon in the summer.
