KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The airport in Afghanistan’s capital has come under attack.

A senior Afghan military official says gunmen have occupied two buildings about 700 yards north of Kabul International Airport and are using them as a base to aim rockets at gunfire toward the airport and ISAF jet fighters flying over the capital. The official says several rockets have hit the airport but no planes have been damaged so far. He also says Afghan forces have surrounded the gunmen and killed two of them.

Alarms have sounded at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, as they usually do when there is an attack in the city. ISAF jet fighters are also patrolling over the city.

The predawn attack comes during a tense time in Afghanistan. A recount is underway from the second round of a disputed presidential election.
