Woman dead, man hurt after house explodes in Ohio

ORWELL, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say a house in northeast Ohio has exploded, leaving one woman dead and a man injured with second- and third-degree burns.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol tells Cleveland’s WEWS-TV that a 27-year-old woman was killed in the explosion. The blast was reported around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday in the village of Orwell, roughly 45 miles east of Cleveland.

The highway patrol tells WJW-TV that the family had been smelling gas for a few weeks, and the man went upstairs and lit a cigarette — and that’s when the house exploded. Photos on the TV station’s website show smoke rising off a pile of rubble behind yellow caution tape, as firefighters mill about.

A dispatcher at the sheriff’s office said by phone that no further information was immediately available.
