Jailed Virginia lawmaker’s election cost nearly $58K

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The special election won by a jailed Virginia lawmaker cost nearly $58,000.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/19bOydq ) that the largest expenses for the Jan. 13 election were rent for churches used as polling places, paper absentee ballots and payments to poll workers in Henrico County. Registrar Mark Coakley says the county spent almost $54,000.

Officials in Richmond and Charles City County put their expenses at just under $2,000 each.

Del. Joe Morrissey triggered the election by resigning his seat after being sentenced to six months in jail for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Morrissey, a Democrat who had been accused of having sex with a 17-year-old employee of his law office, then ran as an independent and won a three-way race to keep his seat.
