WASHINGTON – For those willing to forsgo Passover and Easter family events this weekend, there is quite a bit going on in the region. Pillow fights, Irish theater and cherry blossoms galore!
A small part of New York takes over D.C. Friday through Sunday when the New York City Ballet hits the stage at the Kennedy Center. The performances will be accompanied by music from the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, and will include two programs: All American and 21st Century. Tickets are $25 to $85. Buy online or call 800-444-1324.
Here’s a little known fact: Saturday is International Pillow Fight Day, which is basically exactly what it sounds like. Cities throughout the world break out into giant, public pillow fights. D.C. area residents can get their slumber party memories on at the National Mall at 1:30 p.m. But please, no down pillows. The mess would be unbearable. Check Facebook for more information.
For the theater crowd, don’t miss Irish playwright Conor McPherson’s humorous yet haunting production “The Seafarer” at the H Street Playhouse, running Saturday through May 20. Presented by Scena Theatre and featuring an all-star international cast, the play tells the tale of two troubled brothers spending an, er, uncomfortable Christmas Eve together. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 general admission. Buy online or call 703-683-2824.
Video games aren’t just for kids anymore. On Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., the Strathmore is offering a high brow take on gamer classics like “Metroid,” “Pokemon,” “Final Fantasy VIII,” “World of Warcraft: Cataclysm,” “Portal,” “Mega Man,” “God of War,” “Mario” and more at Video Games Live”. Members of the National Philharmonic and National Philharmonic Chorale will perform music from the games, including a 25-year anniversary celebration of “Zelda.” Arrive early for a pre-show “Guitar Hero” competition. Available tickets are $35 to $76. Buy online or call 301-581-5100.
The cherry blossom love isn’t over just yet. For yoga aficionados, head to the National Mall Sunday morning for a vinyasa flow class led by Lululemon Athletica ambassador Alison Adams. Yogis will meet at 10 a.m. in front of the Sylvan Theater for the annual “Cherry Blossom Yoga”, the largest public yoga practice in the area. Original music for the event was created by using the instructor’s heart rate as a map from which to compose. Visit their Facebook page for more information.
