National lifeguard contest in Va. Beach next month

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — More than 1,200 lifeguards will head to Virginia Beach next month for a national competition.

The National Lifeguard Championships will crown individual and team champions at the event being held Aug. 6-9.

Professional lifeguards ranging in age from 17 to 75 and junior lifeguards ages 9 to 17 will compete in water and beach course events. Admission to the public is free.

The Virginia Beach Lifeguard Association also hosted the United States Lifesaving Association event in 2005.
