Istanbul to host first ATP Tour event

ISTANBUL (AP) — The ATP has announced that Turkey will host its first-ever tour event, the Istanbul Open, in 2015.

The clay-court event will take place from April 27-May 3, a week before the Madrid Open.

It will be held at the Koza World of Sports, billed as the largest tennis academy in the world, with 63 indoor and outdoor courts. The center court has a retractable roof.

ATP executive chairman and president Chris Kermode says, “This incredible new facility in Istanbul will make a wonderful addition to the many remarkable venues that feature on the ATP World Tour.”

Turkey’s addition to the ATP Tour schedule means there will be 62 tournaments in 32 countries in 2015.

Istanbul previously hosted the WTA’s season-ending championships from 2011-2013.
