Weaver forced out of game with stiff back

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Angels ace Jered Weaver has left Monday night’s series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays after two perfect innings because of tightness in his lower back.

The 31-year-old right-hander was taking his warmups for the third when he felt some discomfort. Weaver was replaced by Matt Shoemaker, who last pitched on Thursday, when he threw 102 pitches.

Weaver came in 9-6 with a 3.87 ERA in his 18 previous starts this season. The three-time All-Star, who led the AL with 20 victories in 2012 and pitched a no-hitter that season, is in the third year of a five-year, $85 million contract extension that will expire after the 2016 campaign.
