Legacy wins Cypress Stakes at Los Alamitos

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. (AP) — Legacy beat favorite Onna Bugeisha by a nose Sunday in the $78,300 Cypress Stakes for fillies and mares at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Joe Talamo and trained by John Sadler, Legacy ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.84. The 4-year-old filly paid $8.20, $3.60 and $3.40 for her third victory in 12 starts and pushed her earnings to $151,050.

“We had a perfect trip,” Talamo said. “I had plenty of horse when I came to (Onna Bugeisha) and it was just a matter of who was going to get the head down. Both of those fillies were very game.”

Onna Bugeisha returned $3 and $2.60, and Irish Presence paid $3.40 to show.

Legacy rebounded from a sixth-place run May 18 in the Adoration Stakes at Santa Anita

“It was a disappointing effort last time, but it was good today,” assistant trainer Larry Benavidez said. “She improved and matured in the winter. I think she has to improve a little more to be a graded stakes filly, but why can’t she?”

Talamo also won aboard Two Six Wins in the fifth race and is tied with apprentice Drayden Van Dyke for the meeting victory lead at five after the first four days. Van Dyke rode four winners Sunday.
