7-year-old girl drowns in lake in Spotsylvania Co.

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. (AP) — Police say a 7-year-old girl has drowned in a lake at a subdivision in western Spotsylvania County.

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office says in a news release that the child disappeared as the community was preparing to present a Fourth of July fireworks display at the Lake Wilderness 2 Subdivision. Her family called 911 around 8:30 p.m. Saturday after searching the area for about half an hour.

Spotsylvania County Fire Department divers searched the lake after deputies learned that the child had been seen in or near the water. Her body was recovered at 10:20 p.m. Saturday.

The girl’s name was withheld pending notification of all family members.
