Tommy Johnson Jr. tops Funny Car qualifying

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Tommy Johnson Jr. ran his first career three-second pass in Funny Car to take the top qualifying spot Saturday in the Route 66 NHRA Nationals.

Johnson Jr. had a 3.999-second pass at 317.19 mph in a Dodge Charger in the final qualifying session.

“The conditions out here were difficult,” said Johnson, the winner this year in Bristol. “It’s hot and humid. Personally, I didn’t think we could do it. But the guys were swinging for the fence.”

Doug Kalitta led the Top Fuel field, Allen Johnson topped the Pro Stock lineup, and Eddie Krawiec was the fastest in Pro Stock Motorcycle.

Kalitta had a 3.767 at 327.43, and Allen Johnson finished in 6.485 at 212.79 in a Dodge Dart. Krawiec had a track-record time of 6.872 at 194.86 on a Harley-Davidson on Friday.
