Judge to dismiss some claims in Baltimore officers’ lawsuit

BALTIMORE (AP) — A federal judge says he’ll dismiss several allegations in a defamation lawsuit against Baltimore’s top prosecutor and a member of the sheriff’s office brought by officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who was injured in a police van. 

Media outlets report that U.S. District Judge Marvin Garbis indicated Thursday at a hearing that he would drop some of the claims against State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby and Maj. Sam Cogen of the sheriff’s office.

Five of the six officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray are suing Mosby and Cogen for defamation of character, violation of rights and false imprisonment. Prosecutors dropped all charges against the officers after three were acquitted and another’s trial ended in a hung jury.

Garbis will issue a written opinion in the lawsuit.
