WASHINGTON — A Maryland State police trooper and a 75-year-old man were treated for injuries Saturday morning after their vehicles collided and caught fire around 2 a.m. in Charles County, police said.

Trooper Constance Davis was driving eastbound on Smallwood Drive when her marked patrol vehicle collided with a Chevy Malibu at the intersection of Stone Avenue, Maryland State police said in a news release. Davis’ car then hit a tree, and both her vehicle and the Chevy Malibu caught fire.

Davis was able to escape the burning patrol car, and was transported to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where she was treated for injuries from the crash Saturday morning, police said.

The driver of the Chevy Malibu, James Cousins Sr., 75,  was trapped in his car and had to be extricated by emergency medical service personnel, the news release said. The man was then moved to Medstar Washington Center for treatment.

Davis was working the night shift at the time of the crash, police said.

Police believe that Cousins attempted to make a left turn from westbound Smallwood Drive on Stone Avenue and failed to yield right-of-way to Davis. The trooper tried to avoid crashing into Cousins but failed, forcing the patrol car into a tree.

Nearby people rendered aid to Davis who attempted, but failed, to get Cousins out of his burning vehicle.
