Michelin Guide comes to DC, recognizes 19 restaurants on Bib Gourmand list

WASHINGTON — Michelin will release its long-awaited Guide to D.C. restaurants on Oct. 13, but its inspectors are already giving Washingtonians a taste of what’s to come.

On Oct. 6, Michelin published its Bib Gourmand picks for D.C. — basically the Guide’s version of a “best cheap eats” list. In addition to quality food and experience, Bib Gourmand selections must have menu items that offer two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less (tax and gratuity not included).

Nineteen restaurants — with cuisines ranging from Filipino to Turkish — made the list, including four from D.C.’s darling chef José Andrés.

A Michelin news release states: “Most telling about the value of these selections is the fact that they are the restaurants that the Michelin inspectors themselves frequent when dining off the clock.”

Restaurants that are awarded stars in the Michelin Guide, coming next week, are reviewed by trained anonymous inspectors and tend to be more formal and more expensive than those on the Bib Gourmand list.

When D.C. gets its guide next week, it will be the fourth American city to do so, following New York, San Francisco and Chicago.

Below are D.C.’s 19 Bib Gourmand restaurants:

  • Bad Saint
  • Bidwell
  • Boqueria
  • Chercher
  • China Chilcano
  • Das
  • Doi Moi
  • Jaleo
  • Kyirisan
  • Lapis
  • Maketto

  • Royal
  • Thip Khao
