WASHINGTON – More than a million people are expected to visit the cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin over the next few weeks. There are some precautions you can take to deal with the crowds and potential crooks.

U.S. Park Police Chief Teresa Chambers says don’t make your car an easy target.

“Don’t wait until you park, and then take that expensive item and put it somewhere” Chambers says. “Do it that last few blocks before you park your vehicle.”

That includes items like a GPS system.

The chief says a bigger problem during the festival are the thousands of pedestrians and parking issues.

Metro is your best option, Chambers says. If you are looking for a parking space, the Park Police suggest Hains Point.

“You have the opportunity to take a shuttle bus for a nominal fee and it’s within walking distance if you want a little extra exercise,” Chambers says.

The festival runs through April 27 this year.
