WASHINGTON — A man impersonating a police officer was arrested after he may have attempted to pull over a Montgomery County detective in an unmarked car.

Around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, a Montgomery County police detective was in an unmarked car in the eastbound lanes of the Intercounty Connector near Georgia Avenue when he saw a Ford Crown Victoria that appeared to be another unmarked police vehicle driving by him.

The driver of the Crown Vic, 51-year-old John Angelini, drove up behind the detective and turned on his siren. The detective said he believed Angelini, a Baltimore resident, was attempting to pull him over, according to a police release about the incident.

Angelini then changed lanes and sped past the detective. The detective caught up with Angelini and pulled him over, according to the release.

The vehicle Angelini was driving had red and blue lights and multiple antennas — as is common with some police vehicles. Inside, the vehicle replicated a police car with a radio microphone, emergency lights and switches, a camera on the windshield, siren and flex cuffs, which can be used in place of handcuffs.

The detective arrested Angelini, who is charged with impersonating a police officer. He was released from police custody after posting $2,500 bond.
