KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A NATO air base in Afghanistan where U.S. forces are stationed has come under fire. But NATO says the two rockets that struck the base on the outskirts of the eastern city of Jalalabad did no damage to equipment or buildings.

NATO says there were no fatalities and the base was later secured.

A provincial government spokesman had reported several explosions and said sporadic gunfire rang out for around a half an hour as helicopters flew overhead.

The attack came as scattered violence elsewhere in Afghanistan left 13 people dead.

Also today, hundreds of protesters gathered in Kabul for a peaceful demonstration against the electoral commission. Former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah has accused electoral officials and others of trying to rig the vote against him in his June 14 presidential runoff against a former finance minister, Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai. Results aren’t expected until next month.
