WASHINGTON – Geraldo Rivera is stirring up controversy again after saying he would “bet money” Trayvon Martin would still be alive if he had not been wearing a hoodie the night he was fatally shot while walking home from a 7-11 in Sanford, Fla.
“I am urging the parents of black and Latino youngsters particularly to not let their children go out wearing hoodies,” he said on Fox & Friends. “I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was.”
The former talk show host turned Fox News commentator said he has yelled at his own son, Cruz, about wearing baggy pants and other clothing that some associate with “crime scene, surveillance tapes.”
“You’re going to be a gangsta wannabe? Well people are going to perceive you as a menace,” he said. “That is what happens.”
Rivera prefaced his remarks by saying that Martin’s shooter must be held accountable for killing the unarmed 17-year-old teen.
“I believe that George Zimmerman, the overzealous neighborhood watch captain, should be investigated to the fullest extent of the law,” he said. “If he is criminally liable, he should be prosecuted.”
