Former Sen. Phil Puckett hires defense attorney

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A former state senator whose recent resignation is being probed by the FBI has hired a former federal prosecutor to represent him.

Attorney Thomas J. Bondurant Jr. announced Friday that he is representing former Democratic Sen. Phil Puckett.

Puckett resigned on June 9, a move that gave control of the state Senate to Republicans. At the time of his resignation, he was being considered for a high-level job at the Virginia tobacco commission. Following an uproar over his resignation, Puckett withdrew his name for the commission job.

Del. Terry Kilgore is chairman of the commission. He has also hired a former federal prosecutor to represent him. Kilgore has denied any wrongdoing.

Bondurant said in a statement Puckett has committed no criminal acts.
