PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) — Crews have rescued a 70-year-old man who became stranded with two others while hiking a northern Arizona canyon with Boy Scouts.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office says the man was airlifted Sunday morning from the West Clear Creek area, several miles east of Camp Verde.

Sheriff’s spokesman Dwight D’Evelyn says the man, who has cardiac issues, stayed in the canyon overnight with his son and grandson. Two others were also stranded.

The remaining four were escorted out without injury.

Authorities say four adults and eight teens were reported missing around 3 p.m. Saturday after they failed to show up at a meeting spot.

Deputies and the Arizona Department of Public Safety found the group three hours later.

D’Evelyn says they stayed overnight because rescuers had to wait for daylight.
