Rescuers search for missing kayaker at Great Falls

WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials are still trying to account for a kayaker who went missing near Great Falls.

Montgomery County fire department spokesman Pete Piringer says officials searched Saturday for the boater from about 8:30 a.m. to noon before suspending their search. It will resume Sunday.

Piringer says officials began looking for the boater Friday afternoon after a person reported a kayaker in distress. A kayak and paddles were retrieved from the river about an hour later. But the boater was not found. Piringer says no one saw the kayaker go into the water.

After heavy rains in recent days, Piringer says the Potomac River waters are high, and the current is very strong.
