Teen cyclist dies after being struck by van in Waldorf

WASHINGTON — A 15-year-old Waldorf cyclist struck by a van on Wednesday died of her injuries on Thursday, according to the Charles County sheriff’s office.

Nadine Rafellia Sequinao Leyson of Waldorf was struck near the intersection of Middletown Road and Ethridge Drive in Waldorf as the van traveled north on Middletown Road.

A preliminary investigation by the sheriff’s office determined other vehicles were stopped in the left turn lane of Middletown Road, which obstructed the view of the driver, who failed to see Leyson enter a marked crosswalk on her bike.

The van driver didn’t have enough time to react and struck the teen, police said. The driver remained on the scene. The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the crash.

In April, a 10-year-old boy in a marked crosswalk in Waldorf was struck and killed riding his bicycle.
