Coffee spill solutions

WASHINGTON — Love that cup of coffee, but hate spilling it as you walk?

Science has produced a solution.

South Korean student Jiwon Han, who is a big coffee drinker (surprise, surprise), studied the problem.

His results are in the journal Achievements in the Life Sciences. Han found the motion of walking tends to create a lot of repetitive splashing in a cylindrical mug.

Upon further study, he discovered that sloshing is reduced if you hold your coffee and walk backwards. But since that creates new problems, Han’s second solution is more practical.

It involves changing your grip to what he calls the “claw-hand” posture.

Curl you fingers above your cup and pick it up at the rim with your fingertips.
