Foul ball knocks ump out of Texas-Cleveland game

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Home plate umpire Jim Wolf left the game between Cleveland and Texas after taking a foul ball off his mask in the sixth inning Monday night.

Rangers leadoff Daniel Robertson swung at a high pitch from Indians reliever John Axford, and the foul tip struck Wolf’s mask in the area of his forehead. Wolf came out of the game after a discussion with a member of the Texas athletic training staff.

Wolf was replaced by second base umpire Mark Ripperger after a nearly 10-minute delay so Ripperger could put on protective great. The crew was reduced to three umpires.

Cleveland had a 13-6 lead when Wolf left the game.
