WASHINGTON – A fatal motorcycle crash on the Roosevelt Bridge seriously slowed traffic heading into the District on Monday morning.

The motorcyclist, identified by police as 50-year-old James Greene of Catlett, Virginia, was driving a 2003 Kawasaki Vulcan motorcycle on the bridge heading toward D.C. at about 4:46 a.m. when he lost control of the motorcycle, skidded a short distance and collided with the bridge railing, according to D.C. police.

Greene was taken to a hospital and died later, according to D.C. police.

The inbound lanes of the Roosevelt Bridge were closed for more than three hours after the crash. One lane was reopened at about 8; all lanes were reopened shortly after 9.

Eastbound drivers were being diverted onto Va. 110 to get around the closure.
