On a per-share basis, the Omaha, Nebraska-based company said it had net income of $2.87. Earnings, adjusted for costs related to mergers and acquisitions, came to $2.93 per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.85 per share.

The railroad posted revenue of $6.22 billion in the period, which also topped Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $6.21 billion.
