Malaysian golfer Gavin Green handed 3-month ban by European tour for anti-doping offense

VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) — Malaysian golfer Gavin Green has received a three-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, the European tour said Tuesday.

The tour said Green breached its anti-doping policy when taking a herbal supplement available in Asia as therapeutic treatment for an undisclosed medical condition.

Green, who is ranked No. 554, is eligible to return to competition on March 5 because his ban began retrospectively on Dec. 5.

The tour said Green took the doping control test in August at the Danish Golf Championship, where he finished in a tie for 40th. He has been disqualified retrospectively from that event.

“Green has cooperated fully with the tour throughout the process and accepted the suspension,” the European tour said in a statement.

The 32-year-old Green turned pro in 2015 and has yet to win a tournament on the European tour.

His last appearance was at the Genesis Championship in South Korea in October.

Hope dwindles for rescue in southwestern Japan quake as death toll climbs to 23

KUMAMOTO, Japan (AP) — Rural communities in southwestern Japan were struggling to get their lives back to normal Thursday, two days after a powerful earthquake set off an explosion at a mall, toppled a factory chimney and flattened homes, killing at least 23 people. Time was running out to find survivors, as rescuers continued to work in the Kumamoto area on Japan ’s southern main island of Kyushu, where the magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit Tuesday. The number of those missing was unclear. The quake left at least 63 people injured, five of them seriously, the Kumamoto prefectural government said. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara, speaking to reporters Thursday, gave a higher number for the death toll at 28. That came from a police tally, he said, which includes cases still under investigation. Some of those cases may later turn out to be unrelated to the earthquake.
