15-year-old dead, 3 wounded following shooting in Prince William Co.

A 15-year-old boy is dead and three other people were wounded after a shooting in Triangle, Virginia, Monday night.

Prince William County police said officers responded to the 3700 block of Masthead Trail for reports of a shooting behind a home at 10:30 p.m.

A 15-year-old teenager and a man were transported to a hospital by fire and rescue personnel. The 15-year-old Triangle boy later died from his injuries, police said.

While investigating the shooting, which police said “does not appear to random,” officers then found a 16-year-old boy suffering from “a graze wound.”

Police said investigators also learned that a fourth victim, an adult male, had been taken to a hospital suffering from gunshot wounds.

The 16-year-old boy and both men, 18 and 20 years old, all from Triangle, are expected to survive, police said.

What a neighbor heard

Shaun Peet was inside his wife’s townhome when he said he first noticed the gathering behind a home. At first, he said it sounded like everyone was having a good time, but that changed after some sort of argument erupted, followed by many gunshots he said.

“I looked at my wife and said I don’t think that is fireworks and we both said, ‘gunshots’ at the same time,” Peet said.

After calling 911, Peet said he and his wife went toward the sound of someone calling for help and found a young person laying in the grass.

“He was laying down facing the grass. Screaming ‘Help! Help me! Help me! I don’t want to die,” Peet said.

Peet said he and others from the neighborhood started tending to the person.

“My thing was to keep them breathing until EMTs got there,” Peet said.

Peet who is also a town council member for Dumfries said he was told the wounded person he stayed with survived. But Peet, the father of two 15-year-old twins, said he’s saddened by the loss of one of the teens.

“My heart goes out to the family of the 15-year-old,” he said.

The Prince William County Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the department’s tip line by phone at 703-792-7000 or online.

Pedestrian bridge project near Battlefield High School may be in jeopardy

A safety improvement project that would add a pedestrian bridge along James Madison Highway near Battlefield High School in Haymarket, Virginia, may be in jeopardy. At a Prince William County Board of Supervisors meeting last week, Supervisor Bob Weir, who represents the Gainesville district, said both the estimated $25 million cost and lack of pedestrian traffic may result in the county exploring other safety alternatives.
