All southbound lanes of Route 29 on Colesville Road have reopened after a water main break in Montgomery County, Maryland, forced officials to shut down the commuter route on Sunday.

The roadway reopened in Silver Spring around 1 p.m. on Monday, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration.

The closure — between Southwood Avenue and Timberwood Avenue — began Sunday morning.

Water service has been restored and WSSC Water told WTOP early Monday that crews had made progress and were working to open the southbound lanes in Silver Spring by the evening rush.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Public Information Officer Pete Piringer said utility work is on-hand, and it may become an “extended closure.” 

On Sunday, WTOP Traffic Reporter Mary DePompa warned the closure on Route 29 could make for a messy commute for those driving into Silver Spring.

“If it goes through rush hour, that’s going to be very problematic and could put stress on University Boulevard and New Hampshire Avenue,” she said on Sunday.

On Saturday, there was also a water main break on the bridge that spans Rock Creek Parkway. Knowles Avenue between Strathmore Avenue and Beach Drive was closed through Sunday afternoon.

DePompa also said that the detours around these water main breaks could be tougher on Monday because crews are still cleaning up snow and ice on the side roads from last week’s storms.
