Magic Johnson meets with Washington Commanders players for the first time

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Magic Johnson made a surprise appearance at Washington Commanders practice Wednesday, talking to players and coaches for the first time since becoming a part-owner of the NFL franchise.

Johnson stopped by the practice facility to address the team at a pre-practice meeting. Starting quarterback Sam Howell said Johnson told the team about what it takes to win in professional sports.

“It was awesome, man, just to be able to hear what he had to say and be able to ask him questions at the end and pick his brain,” Howell said. “He’s been through so many different teams and not only as a player but as an owner and won so many championships on both sides of it.”

“Very magical,” Howell said. “We’re just so fortunate as players to have a guy like that as a part of this organization that has an open door and is always willing to help us and with any questions we have.”

Players were able to ask questions and pick Johnson’s brain on what it takes to be a champion.

“He’s been through so many different teams and not only as a player but as an owner and won so many championships on both sides of it, so he definitely knows what it takes. It’s fun to have him here,” said Howell.

Johnson also talked business and other topics as part of a meeting that unexpectedly ran long because of his appearance.

The Hall of Famer is expected to be at the sold out season opener Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. He is one of more than a dozen owners who are part of the group controlled by Josh Harris, which bought the team for $6.05 billion from Dan Snyder.

Commanders Corner: Ron Rivera’s regime ends with another rout

The Washington Commanders parting ways with head coach/personnel chief Ron Rivera was not a surprise by any stretch of the imagination. There were those who had moved on from the current regime as early as the team's faded from 7-5 to 8-8-1 last year (seriously, going 0-1-1 in consecutive games against the Giants?). Whatever gray area there was entering 2023 regarding keeping the status quo (and many thought they'd have to not just make the playoffs but win a postseason game to keep their jobs) was out the window, perhaps as early as the Week 5 Thursday night debacle against Chicago. And if not then, certainly after the losses to the Giants. What ends is an era of another quarterback carousel (seven different starters over four years), underwhelming draft picks and neglected offensive lines.
