15-year-old killed by brother in murder-suicide, Howard Co. police say

Two brothers are dead after a murder-suicide in Howard County, Maryland, on Tuesday, police say.

Two people were found shot inside a home in the 5200 block of Five Fingers Way in Columbia at around 1 p.m., according to a news release from Howard County police.

Michael Bassler shot and killed his younger brother, 15-year-old Stephen Bassler, inside their home before turning the gun on himself, police said.

Both brothers lived at the home, along with a parent who police said was not present at the time of the shooting.

No one else was involved and police said they are looking to find the cause of the shooting.

Here’s a map of where police said the shooting happened.

Two rising stars in the Maryland General Assembly, House Ways and Means Committee Chair Vanessa E. Atterbeary (D-Howard) and state Sen. Sarah K. Elfreth (D-Anne Arundel), told Maryland Matters this week that they plan to compete in the Democratic primary next May. Howard County Executive Calvin Ball (D) is among the political leaders who is also seriously contemplating entering the contest.
