The Charles County Sheriff’s Office in Maryland has identified the body recovered from a deep quarry on Sunday as a missing 10-year-old girl. 

On Saturday, officers responded to the 3900 block of Turner Road in Brandywine to look for Maddelynn Wallace, who had autism and was nonverbal, a sheriff’s office news release said.

Law enforcement officers and staff, as well as several volunteers, participated in the search in an area about a mile away from where Wallace was last seen — a heavily wooded location with many quarries. The search focused on a 25-foot-deep water-filled quarry.

Members of the Charles County Dive Rescue found Wallace dead. Her body was taken to the medical examiner’s office, who positively identified her on Monday. The cause of death was ruled as drowning.
