Closures on Whitehurst Freeway continue as crews clear debris on road

Closures trickled into Sunday morning on the Whitehurst Freeway in D.C. after pieces of concrete fell onto the roadway Saturday, prompting emergency repairs. As a result, the District Department of Transportation temporarily closed the westbound lanes of the freeway at around 1 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday morning, WTOP Traffic reports the partial closure in the westbound lanes continues and the eastbound access ramp from Canal Road is closed.

Crews in the vicinity of the Francis Scott Key Memorial Bridge are working to do repair work and to remove the debris from the road. DDOT said it will provide updates on how long the closure will be, and that the repair won’t affect traffic on the Key Bridge.

The department advises drivers to be on the lookout for changing traffic patterns and recommends that they use different routes. WTOP’s Jessica Kronzer contributed to this report.
