A high school student is dead and a second hospitalized after a crash in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, on Tuesday morning.
Prince George’s County police were called to the area of Ritchie Marlboro Road and Marlboro Pointe Drive around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday for the report of a crash.
First responders said an 18-year-old woman who was in the passenger seat died at the scene. Police identified her Wednesday as Cayliy Haygood, of Upper Marlboro. The driver, an 18-year-old man, was transported to a hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.
In a letter to the community, Principal Taryn Washington confirmed that both students involved were seniors at Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School, which is located about a mile away from the crash.
Preliminary investigation found that the driver tried to overtake a second vehicle when he struck the rear of a landscaping trailer, a Prince George’s County police news release said.
“We will do our best to comfort our Wise community during this challenging time,” Washington wrote. “A support team of school psychologists and professional school counselors will be here to help students and staff work through their feelings.”
