Prince George’s County, Maryland, schools are looking for local artists who might look at a brand-new school building and see a big, blank canvas instead.
The county is looking for artists who want to collaborate on murals at six new school buildings set to open this fall.
Four of the schools — Kenmoor Middle School, Walker Mill Middle School, Drew-Freeman Middle School, and Hyattsville Middle School — are existing schools getting new buildings. The other two, Adelphi Middle School and Colin Powell K-8 Academy, are brand-new schools opening in the fall.
Professional artists who live in Prince George’s County or the surrounding area have until Jan. 25 to submit designs for the schools.
The county is asking artists to come up with something that encourages pride and celebration in each community and celebrates their identity, cultural vibrancy and diversity, while also reflecting a learning environment that welcomes everyone.
It’s up to the artists to bring those themes to life.
The school system hopes to make decisions on which artists it will work with by the middle of February. The size of the mural, as well as the money that will be awarded for each one, can vary.
Artists will also be required to meet with the community and hear what they want reflected in each project.
