2 pedestrians, including 1 child, hit by vehicles in Montgomery Co.

Two pedestrians — including a child — were hit in separate crashes that occurred minutes apart from each other in Montgomery County, Maryland, during New Year’s Eve.

A ten-year-old girl was taken to the hospital after she was struck at about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday in the area of New Hampshire Avenue and Lockwood Drive in White Oak.

Montgomery County police said the little girl suffered injuries that were not life threatening and the vehicle’s driver stayed at the scene.

Separately, around 5:35 p.m., a woman was struck by a car at Watkins Mill Road and Stedwick Road in Montgomery Village.

Police said she was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life threatening. The driver who struck her also remained at the scene of the crash.

This year the county tallied nearly 500 injuries on roads, as well as 16 pedestrian and bicyclist deaths. Montgomery County’s Council President Evan Glass recently said he is making road safety one of his top priorities for the new year.

“Whether you are biking, walking, rolling and, yes, even driving, we need to make our streets safer for everybody … my goal is to make sure that we can more safely and efficiently travel throughout the county and throughout the region,” Glass said.
