Boy, 15, shot while on Green Line in DC

A 15-year-old boy was shot in the leg during a fight on a Green Line train in D.C. Friday morning, Metro said.

The shooting happened around 8:40 a.m. at the Petworth station.

“Preliminarily, it appears an altercation between a group of juveniles aboard the train preceded the shooting. MTPD (Metro Transit Police Department) is currently canvassing for a suspect,” Metro spokesman Ian Jannetta said in an email.

The boy was taken to the hospital. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Service on the Green Line was briefly suspended between U Street and Fort Totten.

A passenger on the train told WTOP she witnessed the shootig. She said she was sitting toward the back of the train when she saw a group of young men approaching another teen. “It looked like they were exchanging some words. … grabbing at him,” she said.

They started arguing, she said and then one of the young men pulled out a gun and she said she heard shots.”

“Everybody started running … People were falling and screaming, and it was probably one of the scariest moments I have experienced,” she told WTOP.

What’s Metro’s plan to fix the wheels on the 7000 series?

Metro has a plan to fix the wheels that it says would return the 7000-series train cars to normal service, which the transit agency has been gradually adding back into operation following a derailment more than a year ago. The plan will include changes to the way the wheels are assembled or pressed to the rail cars, and it's based on data released by the National Transportation Safety Board, which opened a docket of its ongoing investigation of the derailment that happened on Oct. 12, 2021.
