VRE extends free rides between 6 stations until Blue Line reopens

Virginia Railway Express passengers can continue to ride free between six of the system’s stations until work wraps up on Metro’s Blue Line — with fares reduced once it’s brought back.

The mass transit provider voted Friday to extend a fare-free travel initiative between six of its northernmost stations until the Blue Line’s reopening — expected Nov. 5.

That means riders starting and ending their ride within VRE fare zones one (Union Station and L’Enfant), two (Crystal City and Alexandria) and three (Franconia-Springfield and Backlick Road) can enjoy a couple more weeks of free travel.

“We’ve found that the fare-free travel initiative we started back in September has been very successful,” said VRE spokeswoman Karen Finucan Clarkson.

“A few weeks back, when Metro had to extend work on the Blue Line, we started hearing from a number of passengers asking us, ‘is there any way possible to keep this initiative going?’ We thought about it, and approached our board about it,” added Finucan Clarkson.

Due to the ongoing Yellow Line shutdown, fares within zones one, two and three will be reduced until work concludes on that line by next summer.

Single-ride tickets within the three zones will cost $5, and a day pass will cost $10 once fares are reintroduced in November. Ten-trip tickets and seven-day passes will also see price reductions.

Discounts can be obtained through the VRE Mobile app.

Trump announces a $22.5B makeover of Dulles airport that will eliminate the ‘people movers’

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a $22.5 billion renovation of Washington Dulles International Airport that will end the use of the widely disliked “people movers,” the mobile lounges that have been used for decades to shuttle travelers to and from the main terminal. In place of the people movers, the airport will add a new U-shaped passenger train, a central walking tunnel, more moving walkways and new concourses. An above-ground parking garage closer to the main terminal with space for 32,000 vehicles is also in the offing, according to Trump and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. The airport makeover would add to a long list of renovation projects the Republican president is pursuing to leave a lasting mark on the Washington region after his term ends in January 2029. Among other undertakings, he is building a new White House ballroom and wants to build a towering triumphal arch near the Lincoln Memorial. But of all the construction projects Trump is pursuing, the renovations at Dulles could prove to be his most popular and benefit the greatest number of people. The airport, the area’s primary international airport, served roughly 29 million passengers over the past year, according to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
