The northbound lanes of Interstate 270 reopened Friday night, after an overturned dump truck and fuel spill caused a closure that lasted over five hours.
However, delays remain as a result of the closure.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. when a dump truck rolled over just north of Exit 26 in Frederick County. The northbound lanes were blocked north of Route 80/Urbana in Maryland.
Dave Dildine in the WTOP Traffic Center said the backup was more than 5 miles long. With advance notice, he said, some drivers rerouted onto Route 27 through Damascus and Route 28 into Dickerson, which led to congestion on roads that are normally quiet.
Earlier in the day, the area had been declared a hazmat scene, and an extensive closure to begin repairs had been issued.
The driver of the dump truck is injured, Maryland State Police said, but the extent of the injuries are unknown.
The driver was transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, police said.
There wasn’t any cargo in the truck, police said.
