A young man is dead in a Thursday afternoon shooting at the food court at the Mall at Prince George’s, police said.
“As a member of this community, I come to our community and our city angry and disappointed that a man lost his life today in our mall,” said Hyattsville City Police Chief Jarod J. Towers during a news conference.
The 4 p.m. shooting at the Maryland mall was not random, and the death is the second homicide at the mall this year, Towers said.
No arrests have been made.
“Ongoing efforts are already in place today to ensure that security is ramped up over the next couple of days and moving forward,” Towers said.
Towers said the shooting has encouraged the mall to beef up its security efforts, which already included fully staffing security, working with police in Prince George’s County and continuing its partnership with Hyattsville police.
“The mall has been aggressively stepping up security efforts. We have a very strong partnership here with the mall security and mall management,” Towers said.
While the identity of the victim is known, police, at the request of the family, have chosen not to reveal his identity.
The mall plans to reopen at 10 a.m. Friday.
