Skateboarder killed in Howard Co. hit-and-run

A man skateboarding in Columbia, Maryland, was killed in a hit-and-run crash, police in Howard County said.

The body of Joseph Shawn Deliberts, 32, of Columbia, was found by a passerby in the median of Snowden River Parkway, south of Oakland Mills Road, just before 6 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators believe Deliberts was skateboarding in the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle.

Police said investigators have determined the vehicle that struck Deliberts is likely a 2015-2018 Volkswagen Jetta with damage to the front end on the driver’s side. They aren’t sure of the color.

A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information.



Snowden River Parkway was closed in both directions near the scene of the crash for about three hours Thursday morning.

Million-dollar project to add new sidewalks to US Route 1 as Maryland emphasizes pedestrian safety

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a $1.7 million project to improve pedestrian safety on southbound U.S. Route 1 in Howard County, Maryland. The work takes place on Route 1, which is also known as Washington Boulevard, between Cedar Avenue and Crestmount Road in the Jessup area.
